15-year-old student Nathan Han won $75,000, the First Prize of Intel’s ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair), for his Machine Learning Software project, something which will help detect Cancer-causing gene mutations.

The ISEF, the world’s largest high school science research competition, held its ceremony in Los Angeles (USA) and made public the winners in all the Intel Foundation contest’s categories.

Nathat Han, 15, won First Prize for developing a machine learning software tool capable of studying mutations of a gene linked to breast cancer.

Second places and $50,000 awards went to Germany’s Lennart Kleinwort, also 15 (development of a new mathematical tool for smartphones and tablets which minimises computational tools), and Shannon Xinjing Lee, 17, of Singapore (development of a novel electrocatalyst which can be used for batteries of the future).

Wendy Hawkins, Executive Director of the Intel Foundation, said:

“The world needs more scientists, makers and entrepreneurs to create jobs, drive economic growth and solve pressing global challenges. Intel believes that young people are the key to innovation, and we hope that these winners inspire more students to get involved in science, technology, engineering and math, the foundation for creativity.”
